Karamoja is one of the remote destinations located in the northeastern side of Uganda comprises of many districts namely Nakapiripiriti District, Napak District, Karenga District, Moroto District, Kaabong District, Amudat District, Nabilatuk District, Abim District and Kotido District.

The Karamoja Region is bound to South Sudan in the north, Teso and Sebi in the south Acholi and Lango in the west. The word Karamoja is derived from expression “ekarngimor” meaning old men cannot walk any more.  The Karamojong their main activity is cattle keeping they use their cattle for marriage bride price, social status and it is their source of food.

This region is famously known for its vibrant cultural traditional performance where they showcase their dances music and storytelling. Karamoja is endowed with many tourist attractions like national parks wildlife reserve, mountain landscape as well as community tours are conducted while there and many more.

Threats Faced By Karamoja Region

Admits all the positive issues talked about the Karamoja it also faces many challenges and it is ranked among Uganda’s least developed areas, most of the Karamojong are so poor to the extent that they can not manage to get for them selves basic needs like food, shelter, water and many more.

it is alleged that causes of this increased poverty is because of the increased cases of cattle rustling, insecurity, high rate of unemployment, limited source of income, poor leadership, landlessness, drought, poor methods of farming employed, shortage of water, famine this has left many starving as well as loss of many peoples lives in the Karamoja community.

Some non-government organization (NGO) and association like Karamoja Women Umbrella organization (KWUO) have heard the cry for help from the Karamojong and they have simplified some challenges.

Organizations have been able to preserve and promote women rights, boreholes have been constructed, introduction of new better farming method like use of irrigation scheme, provision of jobs to mention but a few hence a great achievement this has improved on the standards of living of the Karamojong.

When Best to Visit Karamoja Region

Karamoja can be visited throughout the year however best during the sunny season that occurs in the months of June to August and December to February because during these periods there is less rainfall received. The weather is more favorable for outdoor activities like guided game walk, community visits among others.
